Delegation
On the way to our first meeting to discuss the project, I was listening to a song called Doubt by Twenty One Pilots, it was at that point that I came up with the idea of glitching faces - the repetitive sounds of the chorus seemed to fit nicely with the theme and the production of the audio had a very gritty but elegant and mechanical sound to it.
Audio
Using Audacity I edited the song into a track lasting approximately 1 minute and 30 seconds, I then sent a quick plan to the group.
Filming
I provided the team with my DSLR camera, and Harry provided us with his tripod, together we scouted interesting locations around Kingston to film our headshots, I came up with the idea of filming the walls twice, once with our faces and once without, that way it would be easier to create effects where our faces glitched in and out of the shot.
Modelling
The idea behind the video is that each of our virtual selves exist in their own personal virtual world, these virtual selves then start to seep into our real lives. It was decided that we would all go and model plain 3D models of our own face, we intentionally did this separate from eachother to ensure everyone's models were different enough and had their own separate personalities. Once all the models had been created we came together again to see what we had come up with.

Animating
We came together for another meeting in which we discussed what would happen in the virtual and glitch worlds, Harry and I had very similar ideas, and Thea came up with the idea of the 3D faces occasionally only glitching on parts of the real face. I was delegated to go ahead and create my first two scenes so that the team would know stylistically what kind of look we wanted to achieve. Once we had an animation we were happy with we all came together and started working on the video in class together, the team reported back to be whenever a new idea for animation cropped up to ensure it fit with the style, for example, Dylan came up with the idea to have our names written in the corner of the videos, but it was decided that it took away from the idea of there being two separate realities and eventually the idea was dropped.

Due to technical and time constraints with Thea's flight home, I was nominated to put her - she rendered out her 3D and sent me her video clips so all that was left to do was to edit them together, in return Thea made sure that all the minutes were written up and formatted correctly.
Final Touches
Finally once everyone had timed their scenes with their allocated music slots, I put them all together into one After Effects project and ensured that everything flowed seamlessly, I then uploaded it to Vimeo and asked everyone to send their assets to me on Dropbox..

experimental 3d will develop inventive and playful strategies with regard to the production of 3D animation, and research experimental theories and art in a wider context, this module will continue development as critical self-learners through engaging firstly in a collaborative creative process, and then working as individuals. |
