Cheating the Illusion Though the ultimate goal would be to create an AI that thinks and feels for itself, when it comes down to today's technology it becomes more of a case of "faking it", and simply creating the illusion that the AI thinks and feels for itself. It can be said that for now, AI chatbots are simply created up of a list of pre-determined responses, so when you're talking to the AI you're actually talking to the programmer, the computer just determines what already written answer is used, and even the parameters for that would have been programmed in manually. Meekan This article from medium.com discusses an AI called Meekan. The idea behind Meekan was to work as an assistant that could organise your work life and would have access to your colleagues work timetables. The programmer has set certain parameters to ensure there is enough free time either side of events written into people's schedules so that mutual events can be placed in everyone's calendars. Responses To make the AI seem more human the programmer put in responses for when unorthodox statements were made, the only issue with this is that the programmer had to ensure there were plenty of responses, because real humans don't repeat the same sentence over and over again. Knowing The Environment A very human-thing to do is to make idle chat related to things in the here and now, especially when it comes to things like time or the weather, by giving Meekan access to this information it makes his responses seem a little more personal, as you won't have the same conversation with him depending on the time of day. Character Though a chatbot's AI is essentially pre-determined responses created by the programmer, if you have spent long enough working on the AI's "character", then the AI's personality becomes as real as a character in a film, or a book - and to some people these characters seem very real, especially when they can relate to them or become emotionally attached to the character.
